If you want to buy him a belt

Go into his closet and find a belt he wears. Lay it flat and measure from the fold at the buckle to the hole that's clearly the most worn. That number in inches is his belt size. It's usually about two inches larger than his trouser waist.

Don't measure to the end of the strap and don't trust the number stamped on the back, which is often the strap length rather than the fit.
