Men's Golf Belts

Why stretch, and not leather

A solid leather strap is fixed length. Your waist isn't, not through a golf swing. You rotate, your torso compresses on one side, and a rigid belt either digs in or drags your shirt out of your trousers. A woven or braided stretch belt gives an inch and comes back.

The cart matters just as much. Four hours of sitting on a belt with a thick buckle and a stiff strap is how most guys end up loosening it on the back nine. Stretch belts sit flatter and stay put.

There's a second advantage nobody mentions. Most woven and braided belts have no fixed holes. The prong passes through the weave itself, so you get the exact fit you want on any given day rather than choosing between two holes an inch apart.

Do you actually need a belt to play?

At a lot of clubs, yes. Dress codes vary and they change, but the common version is a collared shirt tucked in, and a tucked shirt without a belt reads unfinished to a starter who cares. Public courses are usually relaxed. Private clubs and better resort courses are not, and some spell out belts in writing.

Check before you play somewhere new. It's the cheapest way to avoid a conversation on the first tee.

What's on this page

Italian woven cotton elastic at $90 is the entry point and the one most guys buy first. Tan leather tabs, real stretch, and a color range built for a course: orange, yellow, pink, red, white, cream, light green, dark green, royal blue, and black.

Mini woven cotton stretch at $110 is a tighter, finer weave in khaki, red, and royal blue. It reads a little dressier than the standard woven.

Italian woven herringbone rayon at $120 to $125 has a visible chevron texture. Navy, black, red, light khaki, and two-tone combinations.

Braided melange rayon at $110 mixes colors within the braid, so navy isn't flat navy. Also in camel, grey, and purple.

Chevron braided stretch cotton at $120 in navy and grey multi.

Italian woven stretch leather at $105 is the option for someone who wants leather that still gives. Strips of calf woven into a strap. Black, brown, and navy.

Tubular woven rayon elastic at $160 is the dressiest thing here and works from the course to dinner.

Rayon stretch with genuine caiman tabs at $180 tops the page. Real crocodilian tabs on a stretch strap, in cinnamon, teal, and burgundy.

There's also an Italian woven stretch nylon in royal currently marked down to $65 from $100, which is the least expensive belt in the collection.

Color, briefly

Two schools. Match the belt to your shoes and let it disappear, which is the safe play and always correct. Or run the belt as the one loud thing you're wearing, which works if the rest of the outfit is quiet.

White and cream go with almost everything on a course and photograph well. Khaki and light green are the ones you'll wear most. If you want one belt to cover every round, navy.

Sizing

Same rule as any belt: two inches larger than your pant waist. A 34 waist takes a 36.

Stretch belts are more forgiving than leather, so if you're between sizes you have room to be wrong. Extended lengths exist in several of these styles, including the woven cotton elastic and the woven stretch leather. The full run is in Extended Sizes.

Questions we get

What kind of belt is best for golf?
A woven or braided stretch belt. It gives through your swing, sits flat when you're seated in a cart, and lets the prong go anywhere in the weave rather than into a fixed hole.

Do golf courses require a belt?
Many do, especially private clubs and better resort courses, usually as part of a rule requiring a tucked collared shirt. Public courses are generally more relaxed. Check the dress code before you play somewhere new.

Can I wear a regular leather belt to play golf?
You can, and plenty of people do. A woven stretch leather belt is the middle ground: it looks like leather and still moves.

Do stretch belts have holes?
Most of the woven and braided styles do not. The prong goes through the weave, which means you can set the fit anywhere along the strap.

What size golf belt should I buy?
Two inches larger than your pant waist. A 34 waist takes a 36. Stretch styles are forgiving if you're between sizes.

What color golf belt should I get first?
Navy or khaki if you want one belt that works with everything. White or cream if you play in the summer and wear a lot of light colors.

What's the least expensive golf belt you carry?
The Italian woven stretch nylon, currently $65. Woven cotton elastic starts at $90.
