Suede is not nubuck
These get mixed up constantly, including by people selling them.
Suede comes from the inner layer of the hide. The nap is longer and softer, the texture is more velvety, and it's the more casual of the two.
Nubuck is the outer grain side sanded down to raise a short nap. It's tougher, because you're still looking at the strong outer surface of the hide, and the nap is finer and more uniform.
Everything on this page is suede calfskin. If someone sells you a "suede" belt that feels tight and fuzzy rather than soft and velvety, you're probably holding nubuck.
Yes, you can wear it in the rain. Once.
This is the question that stops most men from buying suede, so here's the straight answer.
Suede takes water badly. The nap mats down, water leaves a ring where it dried, and salt in winter slush will leave a white line. None of that is fatal, but it's real.
What to actually do. Spray a new suede belt with a suede protector before you wear it, and again a couple of times a year. If it gets wet, don't touch it while damp. Let it dry away from heat, then bring the nap back with a suede brush, working in one direction. For a shiny worn patch or a spot, a suede eraser lifts it.
Never put oil, wax, or leather conditioner on suede. Those are for smooth leather and they will flatten the nap permanently. That's the one mistake you can't undo.
Handled that way, a suede belt lasts as long as a smooth one. It just asks for five minutes a year that a calfskin belt doesn't.
The three price tiers
$95 to $98 is the standard strap. European sueded calfskin at $95 in black, brown, navy, and slate grey. Italian sueded calfskin at $98 in black, brown, whiskey, grey, and navy. The Italian has a slightly finer nap. Either one is the right first suede belt.
$110 is the dress casual version, with a satin nickel buckle and matching loop. Same suede, dressier hardware, and it's the one that works under a sport coat.
$115 to $125 is where the combinations live. Suede straps with crocodile embossed calfskin tabs at $115 in sunset tan, light olive, tundra, and dark brown. Or the reverse, woven rayon stretch with suede tabs at $125, in wild sunset tan, desert camo, and dirty martini.
The colors worth knowing about
Whiskey is the one to buy if you're only buying one. It's warmer than a standard brown and it's what makes denim and khaki look intentional.
Slate grey and grey are underrated. Grey suede with navy trousers is a combination most men have never tried and it works.
Navy suede reads as texture rather than color from a distance, which is exactly what you want under a jacket.
Light olive, tundra, and desert camo are the ones that make a khaki-heavy wardrobe interesting. Dirty martini is the best product name in our catalog.
What to wear it with
Denim, chinos, khakis, linen. Suede is casual by nature, so it belongs with casual trousers, and it does more for them than smooth leather does.
Suede shoes and a suede belt is fine and does not need to match exactly. Matching the tone loosely is enough, and chasing an exact match usually looks worse than not trying.
Not with a business suit. That's what a smooth dress belt is for.

Questions we get
What's the difference between suede and nubuck?
Suede comes from the inner layer of the hide and has a longer, softer, more velvety nap. Nubuck is the outer grain side sanded to raise a short fine nap, which makes it tougher. Everything on this page is suede.
Can you wear a suede belt in the rain?
You can, but suede takes water badly. It mats, spots, and can show a water line. Treat it with a suede protector first, and if it gets wet, let it dry away from heat and then brush the nap back up.
How do you clean a suede belt?
Brush it with a suede brush in one direction to lift the nap. Use a suede eraser on spots and shiny worn patches. Never use oil, wax, or leather conditioner, which flatten the nap permanently.
Is suede less durable than smooth leather?
No, but it needs different care. The leather itself is just as strong. What suffers is the nap, and a brush and an occasional protector spray handle that.
Can you wear a suede belt with a suit?
Not with a business suit. Suede is casual by nature. With a sport coat and chinos it works well, and the dress casual styles with satin nickel hardware are the ones to look at.
Do my suede belt and suede shoes have to match?
No. Matching the tone loosely is enough, and chasing an exact match usually looks worse than not trying.
What color suede belt should I buy first?
Whiskey. It's warmer than a standard brown and it does the most for denim and khaki.
