Why stretch, and not leather
A solid leather strap is fixed length. Your waist isn't, not through a golf swing. You rotate, your torso compresses on one side, and a rigid belt either digs in or drags your shirt out of your trousers. A woven or braided stretch belt gives an inch and comes back.
The cart matters just as much. Four hours of sitting on a belt with a thick buckle and a stiff strap is how most guys end up loosening it on the back nine. Stretch belts sit flatter and stay put.
There's a second advantage nobody mentions. Most woven and braided belts have no fixed holes. The prong passes through the weave itself, so you get the exact fit you want on any given day rather than choosing between two holes an inch apart.
Do you actually need a belt to play?
At a lot of clubs, yes. Dress codes vary and they change, but the common version is a collared shirt tucked in, and a tucked shirt without a belt reads unfinished to a starter who cares. Public courses are usually relaxed. Private clubs and better resort courses are not, and some spell out belts in writing.
Check before you play somewhere new. It's the cheapest way to avoid a conversation on the first tee.

Color, briefly
Two schools. Match the belt to your shoes and let it disappear, which is the safe play and always correct. Or run the belt as the one loud thing you're wearing, which works if the rest of the outfit is quiet.
White and cream go with almost everything on a course and photograph well. Khaki and light green are the ones you'll wear most. If you want one belt to cover every round, navy.
Sizing
Same rule as any belt: two inches larger than your pant waist. A 34 waist takes a 36.
