Four different things wearing the same name
"Woven" gets used for all of these, and they behave differently.
Flat woven is what most people picture. Yarn woven into a flat strap, usually with elastic through it, finished with leather tabs at both ends. Our Italian woven cotton elastic at $90 is the archetype.
Tubular woven is woven as a closed tube rather than a flat panel. It's denser, holds its shape better, and reads noticeably dressier. At $160 the tubular woven rayon is the most expensive weave here and the one that works with a sport coat.
Braided is strands crossed over each other rather than woven on a loom. Bigger gaps, more visible texture, and the prong sits into the braid rather than through a fabric weave. $105 to $120.
Surcingle is ribbed webbing with leather tabs, the same construction as the girth that straps a saddle to a horse. It's the toughest and cheapest thing here at $65, and it has no stretch to speak of.
What it's woven from
Italian rayon is the workhorse. It takes color beautifully, which is why the melange and herringbone belts have depth that flat cotton doesn't. $110 to $160.
Cotton is cooler and more matte. Our woven cotton elastic runs $90 and the mini woven at $110 is a tighter version of the same idea.
Nylon is the most weather-resistant and the least dressy.
Linen shows up braided with leather, six styles at $105. It breathes and it belongs with seersucker and summer suiting in a way leather never quite manages.
Woven leather is strips of calf woven into a strap. All the give of a woven belt with the look of leather. $105 to $108, and in extended sizes at $130.
Do stretch belts wear out?
Yes, eventually, and anyone telling you otherwise hasn't owned one for five years. Elastic fatigues. It's a mechanical material and it has a service life the way a shoe sole does.
What actually kills them is being left stretched. A belt worn one notch too tight every day, or stored buckled and pulled taut on a hook, loses its recovery faster than one that gets to relax. Store these loose or rolled.
Three things that extend the life: buy the right size instead of relying on the stretch to make up two inches, rotate between a few belts, and keep them out of a hot dryer, which destroys elastic quickly.
Done right, a good woven belt lasts many years. The leather tabs usually outlive the weave.
About the tabs
The tabs are the leather pieces at each end, and they do more work than they look like they do. They take the buckle load and they're what the prong presses against.
Most of ours are calfskin. Several styles use embossed calfskin tabs in a crocodile pattern for contrast. A few use genuine exotic tabs, including caiman and American alligator, which puts real skin at the visible end of a stretch belt.
If a tab ever fails before the weave does, that's the repairable part.
Sizing
Two inches larger than your pant waist, same as any belt. A 34 waist takes a 36.
Don't size down expecting the stretch to cover it. That's the single most common mistake with these, and it's what wears the elastic out early.

Do woven belts have holes?
Most don't. The prong passes through the weave itself, so you can set the fit anywhere along the strap rather than choosing between fixed holes.
What's the difference between a woven belt and a braided belt?
A woven belt is made on a loom, with yarn crossed in a tight, regular structure. A braided belt has strands crossed over one another, with larger gaps and more visible texture. Braided is generally more casual.
Do stretch belts lose their stretch?
Over years, yes. Elastic fatigues. Storing a belt buckled and pulled tight is what wears it out fastest. Store it loose or rolled, buy the correct size rather than relying on the stretch, and keep it out of a hot dryer.
What is a surcingle belt?
Ribbed webbing with leather tabs, borrowed from the girth used to strap a saddle to a horse. It's tough and inexpensive, and unlike most belts here it has essentially no stretch.
Can you wear a woven belt with a suit?
A tubular woven in a dark solid can work with a sport coat or a soft suit. For a business suit, a smooth leather dress belt is still the right call.

Two inches larger than your pant waist. Do not size down and count on the stretch.
How do I clean a woven belt?
Spot clean the weave with a damp cloth and mild soap, then let it air dry away from heat. Don't put it in a washing machine or dryer, and treat the leather tabs like leather.
